Sugar Grove, Ill. — After 36 holes and yet another suspension of play, the United States hold a 20 to 16 advantage over the Internationals as play heads into singles matches.
The day began with an International win, for the second time in as many days. Eugenio Chacarra and Yuxin Lin teamed up to take down Jacob Bridgeman and Ryan Hall, 3&2. Countering the Internationals, Wake Forest teammates Rachel Kuehn and Emilia Migliaccio took a 3&1 win over Penny Brown and Lauren Walsh, a match in which the Americans never trailed.
Later in the morning, France’s Pauline Roussin-Bouchard and Austria’s Emma Spitz needed just 15 holes to take down Allisen Corpuz and Irene Kim, 4&3. Four of the International’s six morning foursome match wins came without ever trailing in the match.
At the break, the International Team led by one, 12.5 to 11.5.
The afternoon saw a third stoppage of play due to inclement weather. Following the two pauses for storms in the area on Friday, a two hour suspension of play on Saturday was called, just as all the afternoon matches got onto the course.
Once play resumed, it was once again the Americans who came out firing on all cylinders.
Erica Shepherd and Sam Bennett rang up the all-England team of Emily Price and Joe Pagdin for a 5&4 victory while Kate Smith and Brad Reeves did the same to the Thai duo of Puwit Anupansuebsai and Virunpat Olankitkunchai. Later in the afternoon it was SEC rivals Latanna Stone and Trent Phillips tackling Penny Brown and Allan Hill, also in a 5&4 rout.
The Americans took eight of the 12 afternoon mixed foursome matches to build a four point lead as the event now turns to singles matches. With 24 matches on the docket, the US needs to secure 11 of the 24 matches to recapture the Cup.
