2019 Arnold Palmer Cup Coaches Named

11/19/18

NORMAN, Okla. – Scott Limbaugh of Vanderbilt and Alabama’s Mic Potter will coach the United States while the International side will be led by Jan Dowling of Michigan and Canada and Mark Immelman of Columbus State and South Africa at the 2019 Arnold Palmer Cup. The Alotian Club, one of America’s premier golf clubs, will host the matches June 7-9, which will be the first to be played in the United States, since being expanded last year to include men’s and women’s USA collegiate golfers against their counterparts from around the world.

Arnie’s Army Charitable Foundation is pleased The Alotian Club is the first United States host to highlight Mr. Palmer’s vision of the expanded matches.  We are happy to welcome Scott, Mic, Jan, and Mark to the Arnold Palmer Cup family as we continue to grow this fantastic showcase of collegiate talent, now heading into its 23rd playing.

Limbaugh has lifted the Vanderbilt golf program to new heights in his seven seasons with the Commodores. Since his arrival prior to the 2012 campaign, Limbaugh has quickly established himself as one of the nation’s preeminent coaches. He has mentored four PING First-Team All-Americans, four Arnold Palmer Cup selections, a Walker Cup member and 13 total PING All-America selections, all while also garnering six consecutive NCAA Regional bids and five consecutive NCAA Championship appearances. Under Limbaugh, Vanderbilt has won 20 team tournaments -- the most by a head coach in Vanderbilt golf history -- and garnered 16 individual tournament winners. He has also led Vanderbilt to a first-place (2017), second-place (2015) and fourth-place (2016) finish in the stroke play portion of the NCAA Championship, Elite Eight appearances in 2015 and 2016, and a Final Four appearance in the 2017 NCAA Championship. In 2015, Limbaugh became a finalist for the Dave Williams National Coach of the Year presented by Golf Pride Grips. One year later he was named the Golf Pride Grips Southeast Region Coach of the Year, and in 2017, he garnered the program’s first Dave Williams National Coach of the Year Award and SEC Coach of the Year, while also winning another GCAA Southeast Region Coach of the Year.

Potter is in his 14th season at Alabama and 35th overall. Potter had already established a Hall-of-Fame legacy before arriving in Tuscaloosa thanks to his impressive work building Furman into a national power. His work over the past 13 years at Alabama has been historic, culminating with the school's first national championship in 2012. Three seasons later, Potter helped guide Emma Talley to the individual NCAA Championship to cap off the 2014-15 season, making her the first NCAA medalist in the program’s history. In 2017-18, Potter narrowly missed his second national title as the Crimson Tide finished runner-up at the NCAA Championships. That finish garnered Potter 2018 National Coach of the Year honors from the Women's Golf Coaches Association, the second such recognition of his distinguished career. Potter, who came to the Capstone after 22 years at Furman, led the Tide to its second NCAA appearance in program history in his first year at Alabama and repeated the feat each of the last 13 years (2007-18). His 2012 national championship, 2018 runner-up finish and 13 straight NCAA Championships berths only reaffirmed his status as one of the most accomplished coaches in women's collegiate golf. With the recent success, the honors continue to pile up for Potter, who helped the Crimson Tide develop into a national power in the ultra-competitive SEC. The veteran coach has won 14 conference coach of the year awards, including six in the SEC, in addition to the two national awards. Three Alabama golfers and Crimson Tide assistant coach Susan Rosenstiel competed in the 2018 Arnold Palmer Cup.

Named the fifth women's golf coach in U-M history in the fall of 2013, Dowling has spent the last four seasons reshaping the Wolverine program into a Big Ten and a national contender. Some of that hard work has paid off as her Wolverines have made back-to-back trips to the NCAA Championships in 2016 and 2017. After a four year wait, Dowling's 2015-16 squad returned to the NCAA postseason by rallying with a sixth-place finish at the Alabama Regional to advance to the 2016 Finals for just the second time in program history and the first in 14 years. After missing the first team cut by just four shots, the Wolverines tied for 18th to end a historic season. This past season Michigan tied for 16th at NCAA’s while Elodie Van Dievoet tied for fourth - both the best in program history. Prior to her stint at Michigan, Dowling served as head coach at Florida from 2009-12 and was an assistant at Kent State, Duke and Tennessee. As a collegiate golfer at Kent State, she helped lead the Golden Flashes to four straight MAC championships. Dowling was the individual medalist two years in a row at the MAC Championship, a four-time first team All-MAC selection and was named the 2000 MAC Player of the Year. She previously served as Arnold Palmer Cup assistant coach at the 2018 matches at Evian Resort Golf Club.

Immelman is in his 18th season at Columbus State. After 14 years of heading up the men’s program, Immelman was announced as the Director of Golf in the summer of 2015, overseeing the operations of both the men’s and women’s programs. He has worked steadily to rebuild the CSU program to its traditional place among the Division II elite. Immelman's squads have advanced to the postseason in each of his 15 years at the helm and finished as runners-up at the National Championship in 2006. He has won numerous coaching awards including being named the 2009 NCAA Division II Dave Williams National Coach of the Year. Immelman has coached 10 PING All-Americans and 26 All-Peach Belt Conference players. In his four seasons playing for Columbus State, Immelman was a three-time All-American while the Cougars won multiple national championships. He was inducted into the Columbus State Athletic Hall of Fame in 2017. In addition to his duties at Columbus State, Immelman is the main instructor at Mark Immelman Golf Instruction working with a plethora of professionals including Trevor Immelman, Larry Mize, Louis Oosthuizen, and many other tour professionals. Also, Immelman does play-by-play broadcasting for the PGA Tour on Sirius XM PGA Tour Radio and works with CBS Sports as an on-course reporter and studio analyst.
